Leukemia: Types & Symptoms

Leukemia or blood cancer originates from the soft tissues located inside the bone, called the bone marrow. We know that every human body’s blood contains three types of cells namely WBC (while blood cells) that creates immunity, RBC (Red Blood Cells) that transport gases across the body and blood platelets that aid in clotting of blood. In the case of Leukemia the WBC starts growing abnormally or does not stop growing; thus over flooding the normal WBCs.

There are mainly four types of Leukemia:

#1 Myelogenous

This leukemia affects the stem cells that eventually become red blood cells, platelets or WBC’s. They can be:

  • Acute
  • Chronic

#2 Lymphocytic

This is the most common form of Leukemia which affects white blood cells. They are of two types:

  • Acute
  • Chronic

#3 There are also rare kinds of Leukemia like the ‘Hairy Cell Leukemia’ and ‘Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia’.

The abnormal growth of the WBCs leads to complications like frequent infections and continued bleeding leading to anemia. The disease can also spread to various other organs and lymph nodes causing pain and swelling in them. Prolonged exposures to various kinds of harmful radiations are prime contributors to the disease. They also run in families.
