Diet plays a very important role in preventing infections and should be prepared from the safest components in a hygienic manner. Since your risk of getting infections is higher in the initial six months, it is good to make these amends prior to going for a surgery and observing the same religiously post-transplant.
Food safety post transplant can be incorporated at different levels of , each one equally crucial to maintaining high degree of hygiene and preventing food borne illnesses.
Follow these quick measures and you will never be wary on any food borne infections:
- Make sure your kitchen is perfectly clean and there are no chances of an pest infestation
- Always wash hands before handling any kind of food items; preference of any hand sanitizer is even better
- Prefer to store canned foods and other shelf stable food at a cold dry place away from the effect of direct sunlight
- Wash all the raw vegetables and fruits, purchased from a local vegetable market or superstore under warm water. Use of special vegetable cleansers can be advised after you check with your transplant surgeon on any contraindications or harmful effects
- Keep your cutting boards separate for vegetables and poultry/meat. Sanitize them with chlorine bleach and make sure you change them quite often to avoid any chances of remnant infection or cross contamination
- Before stacking the vegetables in the refrigerator, make sure the fridge is clean and sanitized and the vegetable basket has no leftovers from the previous purchase, which can rot and spoil the fresh produce as well
- Use a water purifier and replace the candles as advised, look for their performance in terms of filtering viruses and bacteria
- Prefer not to eat anything raw when going outside for meals. Raw salads and sea foods are not at all advised. Make sure chicken eggs and other non-vegetarian foods are properly cooked.
- Avoid thawing frozen foods; restrict your intake of packaging and processed foods that contain preservatives.
- Leftover foods should be placed in shallow dishes to help them cool faster and should be immediately put in refrigerator to avoid any deterioration.
These tips can prevent any immediate infection passed from food and can help build up good immunity as well.
