CanSupport Walk for Life India 2016
On a beautiful Sunday morning, CanSupport held it’s 9th annual Walk for Life event. This time at a new venue Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi. Launched in 2008, this event is organized every year to draw attention from people around the country to come together and support cancer awareness. The walk is held on the closest Sunday to World Cancer Day that falls on 4th of February.
This Delhi-based organization was established by Harmala Gupta, a cancer survivor herself, in 1996.
“Cancer is a life experience. It cannot leave you unaffected. You take what you choose from it. For me it was an opportunity to pause and assess my goals, decide what was really important to me and course correct. I would also like to believe that it has made me a more compassionate and caring person. I am certainly not as impatient as I was nor as judgmental. I am more willing to forget and forgive and move on. Hopefully a more enlightened being?” (Interview)
Having successfully raised awareness and funds to provide free services to cancer patients, the organization is associated with famous celebs who are cancer survivors themselves like Manisha Koirala. People from all over Delhi volunteer to help cancer stricken kids, adults and the elderly and help the terminally ill manage their pain and provide them comfort in this crucial time of their lives.
A recent study revealed that there are more than million new cancer cases every year, but not enough palliative care centres to provide counseling and care to patients suffering from the Big C. Out of this number more than half of the people die due to late detection of cancer. The fact of the matter is that there are more number of patient who require palliative care than those who require treatment. Unfortunately, there are only 200 palliative care centres across India – this number is nowhere close to being enough. Not just that, most of these centres are located in cities making it even more difficult for people residing in rural areas to receive care. A majority of people are extremely weak and require additional care to make them comfortable. (For more details visit CanSupport.)
