What is Acne?

It is a skin disease, caused by plugging of hair follicles by oil and dead skin cells and/or infection by the bacteria.

What causes Acne?

  • Hormonal Factors – Changes in hormone levels – Puberty, Menstrual Cycle, Pregnancy, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
  • Stress
  • Infections – Propionibacterium acnes (P Acnes), Staphylococcus aureus
  • Medications – Corticosteroids, Androgens, Lithium, oral contraceptive pills
  • Diet – Greasy foods

Role of diet?

Generally, the kind of food we eat do not have a major role to play in acne control. The skin disease is basically caused by the fluctuating hormones in our body, which in turn lead to the blockage of pores. However, some evidence with us points out that consumption of a large number of dairy products may be the culprit.

Why do some adults get Acne?

The skin disease mostly affect teenagers who are prone to a greater amount of hormonal fluctuations.

• Adult women experience it when they experience hormonal swings. This can happen during pregnancy, ovarian cysts, menopause and during the menstrual cycle

• The skin disease can be a side effect of certain medicines, such as steroids.

How should people with Acne care for their skin?

  • Wash face twice a day with warm water
  • Do not touch the infected area. It’s a common temptation to pop it but it only worsens the situation
  • Make sure to remove makeup before hitting the bed
  • Allow the skin to breathe and not cover it up
  • Make sure that hair is washed and kept clean from the face

Which beauty products can a person suffering from Acne use?

People with the skin disease need not stop using beauty products altogether. If they find that using a particular brand tend to irritate their skin, they could shift brands. They should buy cosmetics that are labeled “non-comedogenic,” because these are the brands that do not clog the pores.

Who treats Acne?

Treatment can be made by consulting the family doctor or for the need of a specialist, a dermatologist should be consulted.

What is the best treatment for Acne?

The best treatment depends on a number of factors: The patient’s age, how long the acne has been present, gender, how frequently it is present etc. Depending on these factors, the best treatment is decided upon. The preliminary treatment starts off with a cream or gel containing either benzoyl peroxide with an antibiotic or a retinoid. For acne which are more inflammatory, oral antibiotics are given.
