7 Things About An Infant’s Digestive System

Baby’s digestive system at birth is permeable, which in lay mans language means, it has tiny holes throughout the small intestine of that small lovable “tummy”. It may sound weird to us but they are there for a cause – it allows optimum absorption for nutrients from breast milk or formula for baby’s maximum nourishment. All thanks to mother nature.

Bloating, Gas & Constipation in Infants

As mentioned before, the digestive system of babies is permeable. Thus, little food particles are able to pass through these tiny holes in to the blood system. The immune system gets activated and treats them as invaders and gives it a immune response which may symptomize  as rashes, bloating, gas or digestive complaints.

Mild Food Introduction at The Right Age

Baby’s digestive system matures and develops at the age of 5 to 6 months for introduction of mild cereals.
Bloating, gas, constipation or digestive complaints are less prone to happen if the infant is introduced food at the correct age. It will allow the baby’s digestive system to mature and develop. It is also essential for avoiding allergies .

First Food: Rice

Typical food introduction begins with rice cereal. Rice or any other grain must be a part of infant’s first food as grains trigger enzyme production. Enzymes are catalysts required for us to properly breakdown food. The breakdown of grains begins in mouth itself . In infants these breakdown enzymes are not present before 5-6 months . Rice being the easily soluble grain, it should be a part of infants diet plan after 5-6 months of age.

Digestive System Sans Poor Health of Infants

Enzymes play a vital role in breakdown of food and overall health of the infant. As mentioned before the basic enzymes are developed in infant digestive track at 6 months of age , till then the baby’s track is suitable for mild liquid forms only. As food breakdown process starts in mouth itself. The digestive enzymes in the small intestine do not begin to appear until 9 months of age & do not reach their full potential until 18 months of age. The lack of enzyme production along with the inablity to properly digest grains causes problems of absorption of other vital nutrients thus leading to poor health and low weight gain.

Solid Foods

Baby’s show interest in food that we eat. They may show interest in solid foods. By the first birthday infant can tolerate solid foods. Infant can share the table food with family around 12 -14 months of age , mild family food.
Solid introduction plays a vital role in framing infants health and immune growth. Simple carbs and natural protein should be offered to infants as first solid foods as the digestive track isn’t fully matured to digest processed foods.

Diaper Check

Diapers are the best indicator for the inside scene of the infants small digestive track. The color of poop and consistency of poop can say and solve lot of concerns about digestive track. A healthy infant should not soil more than 3 4 diapers a day with normal consistency poop.  A watery poop or smelly poop generally indicates something is not right with the digestive track.

These little knowledge with the baby’s system can keep problems at bay , thus having a happy go lucky baby.
