7 Heart Attack Symptoms
Myocardial Infraction, commonly know as Heart Attack, occurs when the supply of blood to the heart muscle gets reduced thereby depriving the heart of oxygen required to function properly. If the heart attack symptoms are severe, it may cause cardiac arrest that can turn out be fatal.
A well-known cardiologist in India said,
Although heart attack symptoms may vary from person to person, there is one thing in common – The sooner a patient receives the treatment, lesser is the damage to the heart.
A lot of times heart attack starts slowly, unlike the dramatic chest-clutching portrayal shown on the television. Sometimes, a person experiencing a heart attack may not show clear signs and in other times, the symptoms do not even happen in the chest. To recognize a potential heart attack as early as possible, one should know the following heart attack symptoms:
#1. Chest Discomfort
Chest discomfort is one of the most common heart attack symptoms. A person may experience pain, tightness or pressure in the chest and this feeling typically lasts for more than a few minutes. Some patients explain this feeling as 50 kilograms of weight put on the chest, while others experienced strong pinching or burning sensation. This feeling can spread to arms, legs, back or head and neck.
It is important to remember that a person can have heart problems without chest discomfort. This is more often seen in women as compare to men.
#2. Jaw Pain, Toothache and Headache
If discomfort in the center of the chest spreads to the jaw, head or neck then it could be one of the many heart attack symptoms.
#3. Radiating Pain & Swelling in Arms and Legs
Chest discomfort can radiate to arms and shoulder, particularly on left side. Often this symptom is reported with swelling. This happens because heart is not able to pump blood as fast as it should, as a result blood backs up in the veins and causes bloating.
#4. Cold Sweat
Pumping blood through damaged arteries takes more effort from the heart, thereby the body will sweat to manage the body temperature. Cold sweats, especially when not active, is one of the early heart attack symptoms.
#5. Heartburn and Indigestion
Discomfort due to heart attack can happen in the epigastric region. In some cases, patients also feel nauseated or feel sick on the stomach. More women report these symptoms as compare to men.
#6. Fatigue and Shortness of Breath
Sudden fatigue feeling or unexplained loss of strength from a common activity (like climbing stairs or carrying groceries) is a sign of heart trouble. Fatigue and extreme exhaustion, sometimes for days altogether, can be an early symptom of heart attack. This is particularly true for women.
#7. Lightheaded and Dizzy Feeling
If there is a sudden feeling of loss of balance, accompanied by a chest discomfort, then it can be a warning sign of heart attack. Such a feeling typically happens when the blood pressure has dropped sharply because the heart is not able to pump the blood properly.
It is important to know that almost 25% of the heart attacks are silent or do not show any apparent symptoms. This is generally seen in patients having diabetes mellitus. Even if warning signs of heart attack can be mild or vague, it may be just as life-threatening as heart attacks with severe symptoms.
One should understand the importance of seeking an prompt medical care in presence of early signs of heart attack and consult an experienced cardiologist immediately.
